New carbon neutral fire station opens for duty in Surrey
A new carbon neutral fire station has opened in Reigate, strengthening Surrey Fire and Rescue Service’s emergency response while improving firefighter wellbeing and providing a modern facility for the community.

The purpose built 950m2 facility replaces the former station and has been designed around the day to day operational needs of firefighters. Its layout supports efficient movement through the building and improved control of contaminants, with clear separation between operational, cleaning and living areas.
Key facilities include a new appliance bay for regular and specialist vehicles, external access to crew showers to support ‘shower within the hour’ procedures, and dedicated breathing apparatus servicing space. A gym and wellbeing garden also provide modern facilities to support crews working from the station.
Pick Everard supported the project through the Surrey County Council Professional Services Framework, providing design services up to RIBA Stage 3 and acting as technical adviser from Stage 4 onwards. Appointed by Surrey County Council, the multi-disciplinary consultancy worked closely with the council’s land and property team and contractor Neilcott Construction to deliver the new station.
Chris Gilbert, associate director of architecture at Pick Everard, said: ‘Reigate Fire Station has been designed to put operational performance, firefighter wellbeing and long term sustainability at the heart of the building. From the careful separation of clean and operational areas to the all electric energy strategy, every element supports a safer, more efficient working environment.
‘It is rewarding to see the station open and ready to strengthen emergency response in Reigate, providing better facilities for crews and creating a welcoming, inclusive base that will serve the community for years to come.’

Designed as a round the clock operating base, the all electric station combines a high performance building fabric with solar technology and careful energy management. The approach supports local, regional and national net zero ambitions while creating a resilient facility for frontline services.
Dan Quin, chief fire officer, said: ‘The new Reigate Fire Station is a fantastic base for our crews and an important investment in the safety of Surrey people.
‘It marks a significant milestone for us and will help ensure we continue providing the best possible service to our communities.
‘A huge thank you to everyone who has taken part in this project, from early planning and design through to construction and finishing touches.’
Ciarán O’Leary, regional director, Neilcott Construction, said: ‘We are proud to have delivered Reigate Fire Station in partnership with Surrey County Council, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and Pick Everard. It is a modern, sustainable facility that will support frontline crews and the local community for many years to come. We are now looking forward to starting the next phase at Wray Park, upgrading the fire training facilities.’
Funding for the Reigate rebuild was provided by SFRS’s Fire and Rescue Authority and Surrey County Council. The completed facility also includes an ambulance touchdown base for South East Coast Ambulance Service, supporting closer collaboration between local blue light services.
