Greenshank Environmental has launched the UK's first dedicated online platform for the direct purchase of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) credits and Nutrient Credits.

This marketplace is set to transform how property developers meet their mandatory BNG obligations, offering unprecedented accessibility, transparency and efficiency.

With the Environment Act 2021 making BNG a statutory requirement for most new developments in England, ensuring a 10% uplift in biodiversity, developers have faced significant challenges in sourcing suitable off site units. Tightening environmental policy, inconsistent availability and opaque pricing structures have led to delays and uncertainty in the sector around BNG compliance.

Greenshank Environmental's new online platform directly addresses this pressure by simplifying the complex process of securing mitigation credits, providing a streamlined and secure digital solution.

‘The introduction of mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain and nutrient neutrality is a crucial step for nature recovery in the UK, but we recognised the inherent complexities it presents for developers,’ said Kim Connor-Streich, CCO of Greenshank Environmental.

‘Our commitment goes beyond just facilitating transactions; we are dedicated to ensuring genuine ecological uplift. Given the current pressure on the planning system – and the uncertainty created by proposed policy changes – it is essential that the BNG and nutrient markets are transparent, stable and easy to navigate. This platform is designed to bring clarity where it has been lacking. We are proud to be at the forefront of enabling both sustainable development and significant nature recovery in the UK.

‘Over the coming months, we will be adding more ‘habitat banks’ to the platform, and we are looking to partner with more schemes around the country.’

Through the new platform, developers can browse available credits, view pricing and unit types, and purchase verified BNG and nutrient credits directly online, with all documentation generated automatically for planning submission.

Greenshank Environmental’s launch marks a significant milestone in the UK’s built environment, helping to formalise the nascent natural capital markets as more open and accessible, supporting meaningful biodiversity outcomes, and giving developers the clear routes to compliance they urgently need.
