Green Tourism has announced the launch of a new carbon tracker for the tourism industry, independently validated as compliant with the ISO 14064-3 standard. It is believed to be the first carbon calculator created specifically for tourism and event businesses to achieve this level of verification.
Developed over two years and piloted with a range of tourism businesses, the tool, the Green Business Carbon Tracker, has been assessed by Control Union, an international certification body. It will be rolled out for free to Green Tourism members during December and made available to any tourism and event businesses from January 2026, regardless of membership.
Carbon measurement can be challenging for tourism and hospitality businesses, particularly as most emissions come from activities outside their direct control, such as suppliers and customer travel. The tracker simplifies this process by offering a clear and easy to use approach to measuring all relevant emission sources using a trusted methodology aligned with international standards and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
The tourism industry is responsible for around 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. With uncertainty following COP30 and growing pressure on businesses to demonstrate transparent progress towards net zero, there is increasing demand for credible tools that provide reliable carbon data. Green Tourism’s three decades of experience in sustainable tourism have informed the development of a tool designed specifically to meet these needs.

As part of the independent assessment, Control Union confirmed that the tracker is consistent in estimating greenhouse gas emissions in kgCO2e, provides a fair and materially correct representation of emissions for participating companies, and has been prepared in line with recognised international standards for greenhouse gas quantification, monitoring and reporting.
Andrea Nicholas, chief executive, Green Tourism, said: ‘Achieving this level of independent verification is a proud moment for Green Tourism and a significant step forward for the industry. For nearly 30 years we have pioneered sustainable practice in tourism, helping businesses understand their impact and make meaningful improvements. The Green Business Carbon Tracker represents the next stage in that journey, giving tourism operators and event businesses a clear, credible and accessible way to measure their emissions and take confident strides towards net zero.’
Dr Toru Tsuzaki, certifications director, Control Union, added: ‘Congratulations to Green Business on the successful validation of its carbon tool which is specifically designed for the tourism and hospitality sector, conducted in accordance with ISO 14064‑3 by Control Union. This achievement demonstrates Green Tourism’s commitment to transparent, credible, and internationally aligned carbon accounting practices, setting a strong benchmark for sustainability leadership within the sector.’
