Green Britain Foundation tackles first beach clean in Weston-Super-Mare

The Green Britain Foundation (GBF) has announced a beach clean up, taking place on Wednesday 17 September in Weston-Super-Mare. 

The initiative builds on the success of recent litter picks in Coney Beach in Wales where volunteers, alongside the GBF, removed over 1.1 tonnes of waste, disposable barbecues and dog mess in five early morning beach cleans. These cleans followed firework displays on the beach and removed debris left by onlookers. So far this year, dedicated volunteers have removed 2.25 tonnes of rubbish from the beach.

Weston-Super-Mare has been chosen as the location for the latest clean up due to high levels of waste left behind over the busy summer months, particularly near food outlets and beach stalls. Volunteers will focus on removing disposable packaging, BBQ equipment and other debris, helping restore a much loved local beach for residents, visitors and wildlife alike.

The clean up forms part of GBF’s Fish Net Zero marine conservation programme, which tackles ghost fishing gear and debris left in UK waters and on beaches. It will bring together partners from Forest Green Rovers FC and colleagues from across GBF, turning a volunteering day into direct action for our beaches and oceans.
