Exchange For Change, the industry led organisation delivering the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), has published the first list of certified Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) , supporting retailers as they prepare for the scheme’s launch on 1 October 2027.

Certification confirms that a machine is compatible with the RVM specification required to operate within the scheme, having undergone rigorous testing and assessment to reach the certification standard.

Travis Way, managing director at RVM specialists EcoVend, part of Reconomy, said: ‘The publication of the first certified reverse vending machine list gives retailers greater clarity as they prepare for the Deposit Return Scheme. With less than a year to go until launch, retailers should now be assessing their store footprint, considering how returns will fit into day to day operations and making sure staff are trained and ready to manage the process. Getting these practicalities in place early will be key to ensuring a smooth transition when the scheme goes live.

‘A reliable, accessible network of return points will be key to encouraging participation, capturing more valuable materials for recycling and delivering the environmental benefits the scheme is designed to achieve.’
